What are pigment spots?

Pigmentation spots, such as brown spots , lentigines or melasma , are common skin irregularities caused by an overproduction of melanin , often due to sun exposure, skin aging or hormonal factors. To treat these imperfections, several technologies are available in the office, such as the Alexandrite laser , IPL (intense pulsed light) and the Q-Switch laser.

The different types of lasers used in the office

Alexandrite Laser

This laser is a cutting-edge technology that is particularly effective in treating pigment spots . It emits a 755nm light, which is absorbed by the melanin contained in pigment spots. This light breaks down the melanin and dissolves it, allowing the skin to regain a more even and luminous complexion . The Alexandrite laser is suitable for light to medium skin and is particularly effective for solar lentigines, age spots and superficial pigment spots.

Benefits :

  • Targeted precision on pigment spots.

  • Fast and lasting results.

  • Non-invasive with low pain.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for pigment spots

It is a non-invasive method that uses broad-spectrum light to target melanin in the skin. Unlike lasers, which emit a single wavelength, IPL offers a range of wavelengths that can be adapted to the different depths of pigment spots. This technology is particularly effective for treating more superficial , more widespread spots, sun spots, or spots related to skin aging.

Benefits :

  • Treats multiple types of skin imperfections at the same time.

  • Less painful and faster than some other lasers.

  • Suitable for light to medium skin tones.

Q-Switch Laser for darker skin

This is a more powerful technology, ideal for darker skin (phototypes III to VI). It uses ultrashort, powerful pulses of light to target melanin in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. Q-Switch is particularly effective for deep pigmentation spots and stubborn melasma, while being safe for pigment-prone skin.

Benefits :

  • Safe for dark skin and higher phototypes.

  • Targets deep and stubborn stains.

  • Less risk of depigmentation or burns.

How are pigment spots treated?

  • Initial consultation : A skin examination is performed to determine the type of pigment spots and choose the treatment best suited to your skin and your expectations.

  • Treatment session : Depending on the technology chosen, sessions of 20 to 30 minutes are performed. A tingling or slight heating sensation may be felt.

  • Post-treatment care : After each session, it is imperative to avoid sun exposure and apply moisturizing and restorative creams to promote healing. For aftercare, it is strongly recommended to apply a cream with an SPF 50+.

Results and maintenance

Results vary depending on the nature and depth of the spots, but generally, several sessions are necessary to achieve an even complexion. Pigmentation spots begin to fade after 2 to 3 weeks , with visible results after a few weeks to a few months. Maintenance may be recommended every 12 months , depending on your skin's needs.
